Newcastle Light Rail — FAQs

How many stops does Newcastle Light Rail have?

Six stops, west to east: Newcastle Interchange, Honeysuckle, Civic, Crown Street, Queens Wharf, and Newcastle Beach. The line is about 2.7 km long.

How do I pay for Newcastle Light Rail?

Use an Opal card or a contactless bank card, phone, or watch. Tap on at the platform validators before boarding and tap off when you leave. Check current fares on Transport for NSW Opal pages—this site does not publish dollar amounts because they change.

What are the hours and how often does it run?

Services generally run from about 5:00 am to 1:00 am daily as a turn-up-and-go service (about every 7–8 minutes in weekday peaks and about every 15 minutes at other times). Always confirm on the official Newcastle Transport light rail timetable PDF.

Can I transfer from the train at Wickham?

Yes. Alight at Newcastle Interchange, follow signs to light rail, tap on, and ride east toward Civic or Newcastle Beach. Opal transfers with other modes usually apply within about 60 minutes—confirm current rules on transportnsw.info.

Is this the official Transport for NSW site?

No. newcastlelightrail.com.au is an independent Farming Domains visitor guide. For live times, disruptions, and official maps, use Newcastle Transport and Transport for NSW.

Why aren’t exact departure times on this page?

A frozen clock list goes out of date and can mislead. Newcastle Light Rail is turn-up-and-go for most of the day. Use the TfNSW trip planner or Newcastle Transport’s weekly PDF for today’s departures and first/last services.

I already have Opal — do I need this site?

Locals often want extension status, transfer rules, last services, or what is near each stop. Use the “Already ride NLR?” shortcuts on the home page, or jump to Extension, Timetable, and How to ride transfers. Live disruptions still come from official apps.
