Stop 1 of 6 · Wickham
Newcastle Interchange
Western terminus and the main gateway if you arrive by train. Light rail, local buses and regional/Sydney trains meet here in Wickham.
Best for
Train passengers from Sydney, the Central Coast and the Hunter; bus connections across Newcastle; walkers heading into the Honeysuckle waterfront precinct.
Access
Level boarding from platform to low-floor CAF Urbos 100 vehicles. Follow on-site lifts, ramps and tactile paving between train platforms, bus bays and the light rail stop. Allow extra time if you are changing modes with luggage or a mobility aid.
Transfers
From NSW TrainLink / Sydney Trains services: alight at Newcastle Interchange, follow signs for Light Rail / Newcastle Transport. Tap on at the light rail platform before boarding. Opal and contactless bank cards/devices work across modes with the usual NSW transfer rules (generally a 60-minute transfer window — confirm current rules on transportnsw.info). Buses serving the interchange are marked on local network maps from Newcastle Transport.

Waterfront urban renewal precinct — apartments, offices, hospitality and harbour views between the interchange and Civic.
Best for
Hotel and apartment guests, harbour dining, evening promenade walks, and people connecting toward Queens Wharf and the ferry without walking the full foreshore.
Access
Level boarding; open platforms typical of the corridor. Surfaces along the foreshore are generally paved; some boardwalk segments can be busy at peak dining times.
Transfers
No heavy-rail transfer here. Walk the foreshore west to the Interchange (one stop / short walk) or east toward Civic and Queens Wharf. Bicycle parking may be available nearby — use racks provided and secure your bike.

Access
Level boarding. CBD footpaths are generally firm; watch for kerb ramps at crossings on Hunter and King Streets. Theatres and public buildings usually publish their own access guides.
Transfers
Local buses on nearby streets — check the Newcastle Transport network map. Walk south toward Darby Street (via Crown Street stop is often closer for the restaurant strip). Walk east along Hunter Street toward Crown Street and the beach.

Level boarding. East-end streets can include heritage footpaths and occasional steep short grades toward The Hill — take main routes if mobility is limited.

Walk south to Darby Street restaurants and bars. Walk east to Queens Wharf and the beach corridor. No train transfer at this stop.

Ferry passengers, foreshore events, cruise and harbour visitors, and people walking Bathers Way connections via the beach end.
Access
Level boarding. Foreshore paths are mostly flat and popular with wheelchairs and prams; wind can be strong on open sections.
Transfers
Stockton ferry operates from the Queens Wharf / harbour area — confirm wharf location, tickets (Opal applies on the ferry in the Opal network) and timetable on Newcastle Transport / transportnsw.info before you go. Light rail continues one stop to Newcastle Beach.

Swimmers, surfers, coastal walkers, beachfront accommodation guests, and visitors heading to Fort Scratchley, Nobbys and Bathers Way.
Access
Level boarding at the stop. Beach access includes ramps and paths in places, but sand, stairs to headlands and some ocean-pool approaches are not fully step-free. Check City of Newcastle beach and pool access information for current conditions.
Transfers
End of the line — alight here for the beach. Walk or local bus for Merewether further south along Bathers Way. Return westbound for Civic, Honeysuckle and Newcastle Interchange trains.
